Seven Oils Seven Days – Day 3 – Luscious, Lifting, Lavender

by Jill Taylor

It's summertime!! Time for outdoor fun! Whether it's a trip to the beach, a game of golf, whitewater rafting, camping, a softball game, or an outdoor barbecue, summer is certainly a great time for enjoying outdoor activities with family and friends. And what could be more refreshing on a hot summer day than a glass of refreshing and delicious Lavender Lemonade? (See recipe below.)

So with the joys of summer, along comes the peskiness of bugs! What can we do to protect ourselves from insects without exposing ourselves to the toxic chemicals in commercial insect repellents? How about a natural bug repellent made with completely safe and healthy therapeutic essential oils?

Michigan NBC Affiliate Tests Essential Oils as Bug Repellent

NBC did a story in Michigan comparing commercial, chemical-filled insect repellents with a Young Living essential oil bug repellent and found Young Living's worked just as well as the potentially dangerous products.

They mixed Thieves oil blend, lemon, Purification oil blend, peppermint, and lavender in a spray bottle with water. The gentleman who provided the Young Living oils said, "When you put these oils in a spray bottle with water, it's just as effective as the other products.  Just spray yourself down, go outside at night, and the mosquitoes are going to go, 'Who's this guy?'"

Other Bug Repellent Recipes:

• Combine 10 drops lavender, 10 drops lemongrass, 5 drops peppermint and 1 drop thyme with water in a 2 oz. spray bottle. Shake well and spray on.

• Combine 10 drops Purification, 10 drops peppermint and 5 drops Purification with water in a 2 oz. spray bottle. Spray clothing and exposed skin to protect yourself against insects, flies, and mosquitoes. Bugs will be gone without resorting to neurotoxic DEET!

• Put lavender, Purification, peppermint, and lemongrass in travel diffuse on picnic table.

Note: For longer protection, mix the oils with almond oil, sesame oil, or Young Living's V-6 oil.

Insect Bites:

  • Purification on any insect bite, especially poisonous bites to neutralize the poison. (Purification is another one of the oils in Young Living's "Start Living with Everyday Oils" kit.)
  • Lavender and peppermint to soothe and stop the itching.

When it comes to anti-aging and staying young and beautiful, it's important to protect our skin from over-exposure to the sun.

I remember when I was a junior in high school, I went to the senior prom and a group of us went on a canoe trip the next day. I have fair skin, and like a fool I didn't apply sunscreen before I sat in a canoe for 4 hours!! Duh!

The tops of my shoulders and the upper part of my back, as well as the tops of my legs were scorched! Ouch!! By that evening I could not walk with my legs straight and they almost took me to the hospital, I was so sick and in so much pain! How I wish I knew then what I know now!

If I knew I was going to be in the sun for extended periods of time, I would take more Super C and extra Mineral Essence because minerals and Vitamin C provide a certain amount of protective effects to sun exposure. And besides the obvious necessity of using sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium oxide or both, today I know if I happen to miss any places with my sunscreen, I have the wonderful benefits of lavender oil and Lavaderm Cooling Mist, for taking the pain away and healing my sunburn without blistering, peeling, or scarring. Having lavender and Lavaderm Cooling Mist on hand is also a good idea for any burns associated with barbecue grills or campfires.

Caution: “Pure” lavender is often extended with hybrid lavender or synthetic linalol and linalyl acetate – it is extremely important to use only therapeutic-grade lavendula angustifolia lavender. I personally would NEVER use any lavender other than Young Living lavender for sunburn or a burn.

Natural Sunscreen Tip:

"The most effective sunscreen I have ever found is organic avocado oil and lavender. I have always had skin that burned very quickly, and I lived at the beach in South Florida and now in the tropics in Asia. I mix 4 oz avocado oil with 30 drops Young Living's lavender oil and massage it generously into exposed areas, and reapply it after swimming. Avocado oil is very soothing and hydrating for the skin. Lavender Lemonade Recipe

Here's the Lavender Lemonade recipe they make at the restaurant at the Young Living Farm – It is delicious – Enjoy!

Lavender Lemonade

7 lemons, peeled and juiced

2 limes, peeled and juiced

1 drop lavender oil

14 cups water

1-1/2 cup Young Living's Blue Agave or organic raw agave

Mix all ingredients together and chill.

Add more water or Blue Agave, depending on the size and tartness of the fruit.

Drop the lavender onto a spoon so you don't add more than a drop of lavender oil so it doesn't overpower your lemonade.

Note: you can cut the recipe in half, and for the lavender oil – put a toothpick in the lavender oil and swirl the toothpick through the lemonade.

Lastly, Young Living just announced a one-week ONLY special promotion – Boswellia Wrinkle Cream at 25% off ! You can only purchase this until JULY 22nd. (This is a beautiful moisturizing cream – I love it!)

Boswellia Wrinkle Cream worked on dryness, acne, hyper-pigmentation, and fine lines

"Since I've been in school and not working full time, I've been reluctant to spend a lot on beauty and skincare.  One product I think is completely worth splurging on is Young Living's Boswellia™ Wrinkle Cream. Considering that, at 23, I'm not very concerned about wrinkles, the fact that I'm willing to spend so much on a wrinkle creme is even funnier.

Usually I have normal to oily skin, but this past winter, after struggling with breakouts, I changed up my entire skincare routine.  I was a lot happier with it overall, but I ended up with a few dry patches.  I tried more affordable moisturizers, but didn't get any significant results, so one night, I decided to try my mom's Boswellia™ Wrinkle Creme in place of a moisturizer.  It absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling soft and moisturized.  The next day, my skin still felt great and the tightness and dryness I'd been experiencing hadn't come back.

Young Living states that 'Boswellia™ Wrinkle Cream nourishes skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Its primary ingredient methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) supports collagen to improve skin firmness and minimize fine lines. Essential oils of geranium, myrrh, sandalwood, and ylang ylang soothe and soften the skin, while frankincense and wolfberry oil enhance collagen formation.'

My results after one month: Not only did the creme help with dryness, but it also helped clear up the breakouts I'd been struggling with. I also noticed an improvement in a few spots where I had hyper-pigmentation from old acne breakouts and my skin is smoother and softer overall as well. I've also got two lines on my forehead, between my eyebrows – I think just from the facial expressions I tend to make.  After about a month of using this, I noticed they were less visible, and after 2-3 months use, they're almost completely gone!  They aren't really wrinkles, per say, but they were pretty visible lines, and with how amazingly the Boswellia Wrinkle Creme worked on them, I'm pretty confident that it would be effective on wrinkles as well.

The Boswellia Wrinkle Creme is definitely my favorite of the Young Living skin care products I've tried. I can't speak to how it works on wrinkles, but I found it to be a great moisturizer and I did see results on fine lines.  I do think the results I've gotten justify the price point. Also, because you don't need to use a lot of product, the 2 ounce jar should last a good while.
